A Part of You Review: Heartbreaking Coming-of-Age Movie Makes its Way to Netflix

A Part of You Review

Netflix had a range of movies released in May, and as the month has almost ended, the streaming platform is ending on a strong note with the latest Swedish movie, A Part of You. This a story about two sisters, where one is left grief-stricken after the sudden passing away of the other. A Part of You will leave you with a broken heart at the end, but it’s the kind of movie you will remember for days, or even months to come.

The concept of A Part of You wasn’t all that new and there were parts that felt almost a little too familiar, but despite the few lows here and there, this movie has officially made its mark on Netflix, and it will be interesting to see how well it does in terms of viewership.

While the jury is still out, keep reading our review to find out why we think A Part of You should be a part of your Netflix watchlist.

The Bittersweet Truth of Life Portrayed in A Part of You

To begin with, A Part of You seems like a simple movie. One daughter abides by the rules and the other who is a bit of a rebel. However, things change one night when Agnes and Julia make their way to a party, but don’t return home together. Instead, Julia is met with a horrible car accident that results in her death, leaving Agnes and her mother behind.

The aftermath of Julia’s death is what the movie is all about, and how Agnes copes with her sister’s death, someone she was so incredibly close with. Agnes’ coping mechanisms are different from what is usually portrayed in movies, and that sets A Part of You apart from most movies that deal with death. Instead of avoiding things that Julia was connected to, Agnes is drawn towards them.

When Agnes goes back to school, sooner than she was supposed to, everyone is quick to feel sorry for her after the devastating loss. However, Agnes seems rather nonchalant about it all and wants to dive back into work, particularly drama class as she prepares herself for a school play. In addition to this, Agnes always starts wearing Julia’s clothes.

It starts with Julia’s clothes but soon enough turns into behaving like Julia, from drinking to partying to smoking – everything! Agnes appeared to be so much like Julia, in hopes that she wouldn’t feel her absence. This was a beautiful portrayal of loss, and more importantly, a person experiencing such personal loss for the first time.

The movie also focusses briefly on Anges’ relationship with her mother, which also deteriorates after Julia’s death, but it is evident that both of them need each other, and that’s exactly where the movie takes the viewers. Every scene in A Part of You is stunningly beautiful, and it will be impossible for anyone to take their eyes off the screen.
