Pachinko is one of the most critically acclaimed series on Apple TV+ and it has gained plenty of recognition since its first season. This series deals beautifully with human emotions, especially with the backdrop of an ongoing war, which brings us to Season 2.
So far, this latest season has had its share of heartbreaks, especially with the death of Isak in Episode 2, and we’re certain there’s plenty more in store.
Pachinko Season 2 Episode 3 is now officially available on the streaming platform, with Sunja and her children moved out of Osaka, but the hurdles don’t come to a stop. In this review, we will explore more elements of the latest episode, and there will be some spoilers ahead, so make sure you keep a lookout!
A Mother and a Widow
Pachinko Season 2 Episode 3 deals with the aftermath of Isak’s death, which was a shocking and heartbreaking moment for his wife, Sunja, and the whole family. The episode’s opening scene is frankly anxiety-inducing with sirens blaring, people running for shelter, and Sunja struggling to find Noa as she holds Mozasu close to her.
At this moment, Hansu comes to their rescue, and Sunja also convinces Kyunghee, her sister-in-law, that they must leave with Hansu in order to be safe.
Once Americans begin the bombing, there will be no escaping, so Sunja, Kyunghee, along with the children, leave Osaka behind as they travel in Hansu’s car, watching the explosions from afar. Although these characters are safe, and the story continues, it doesn’t make the scene any less heartbreaking, keeping in mind that this happens after Isak’s death, which they don’t even have a moment to mourn.
As Kyunghee and Sunja reach their destination, they realize it is far from what they had imagined, and Hansu also insists that one of his men, who is a complete stranger to Sunja and her family, live with them for protection. Sunja and Hansu have a moment of confrontation, as Sunja claims she isn’t the woman Hansu met all those years ago, and she has changed since.
It is now June 1945. Sunja and Kyunghee have adjusted to their new lives, begrudgingly so, as they don’t get along with the other women there, who talk about Sunja in Japanese. However, at least her children have appeared to have adjusted to their new lives. In the present time, We also catch a glimpse of Solomon’s desperation when it comes to the deal as he meets Tom Andrews, an old colleague.
Hansu also attempts to bond with Noa, bringing a TV for the family, and Sunja is immediately a little apprehensive of Hansu’s closeness with her son. This episode focused primarily on the adjustment from Osaka to their new home in the countryside, and the following episodes will expand more on how they proceed, as Kyunghee continues to worry for her husband.
Conclusion
There were moments where Pachinko Season 2 Episode 3 felt more like a filler episode, but characters continue to grow under these unique circumstances they find themselves in, including Solomon in 1989. We’re keen to find out what’s next, and if you are too, make sure you keep a lookout for our review of the next episode!
