What Is Tokyo Swindlers All About?

Hitoshi One has written and directed Tokyo Swindlers and it’s based on a novel by Shinjo Ko. The series is about a group of con artists who plan to take on a piece of property next to a temple that is prized at ten billion yen.

They start posing as real estate agents and land owners. The series is produced by Miyake Harue and Yoshida Kenichi and its seven episodes were released on Netflix on July 25th.

How Did The Previous Season End?

The ending of Tokyo Swindlers, in its seventh episode, shows that Harrison Yamanaka is not dead and his close associate Takumi Tsujimoto doesn’t know that. It is revealed that Harrison recorded the killings of people because it gave him a high like consuming the meat of people. Harrison goes towards the mountain to hunt for animals.

Takumi-san is also there who also makes a killing attempt on Harrison. However, it doesn’t happen and Harrison goes to live but there is an attempt to put him in jail. The ending is sort of open and the rift between these two continues, leaving the question lurking around for a possible second season.

Is Tokyo Swindlers 2 Happening?

Netflix has not commissioned Tokyo Swindlers 2 so far, but given that the series has just ended, we should wait for a while. The series ends on a note where many subplots are still not resolved.

So the makers might move ahead to finish those stories. However, this will only happen if and when it garners substantial good viewership for the streamer which will be then evaluated for any decision.

What To Expect From It?

Takumi realizes that Harrison killed his family and tracks him into the mountain. Reiko and Gotto are also dead. After a fight takes place between Takumi and Harrison, the latter even manages to survive a grenade attack.

Tokyo Swindlers 2, if greenlit, can take forward from this point and showcase what happens after Takumi’s confession of all his crimes.

The team is broken and the land swindling has taken place. The next season might have them trying to swindle yet another piece of land. But that is very unlikely because their moral compass has risen after seeing its consequences on people.

Meanwhile, Harrison is alive and he might go on a rampage in Tokyo Swindlers 2 as he continues to have a thing for murdering people.

Who Will Be In The Cast?

The principle cast might return in Tokyo Swindlers 2 if it takes place. This includes Go Ayano portraying Takumi Tsujimoto while Etsushi Toyokawa plays Harrison Yamanaka; Kazuki Kitamura might also come back as Takeshita. Eiko Koike and Pierre Taki, who played Reiko and Gato respectively will not come back.

It’s because these characters died in the final episode of the earlier season. Some supporting cast might also appear again in the follow-up season. Netflix is yet to unveil its plan to commission the second season and or its release date. We can only speculate the latter once the show goes into production.

Conclusion

Tokyo Swindlers was a refreshingly gritty show from Japan in the crime thriller space. It revolved around real estate scams which is something we rarely see in any show or movie. The characters, writing, visuals, and performances ticked every box and the show became a success.

Viewers are now anticipating Tokyo Swindlers 2 and they are expecting Netflix to go ahead with it. This will also benefit them as the market in Japan will expand if they continue to provide good quality shows.
