San Diego Comic Con’s Hall H has witnessed some of the biggest applause this week, and we have Joe and Anthony Russo to thank for that, to begin with. Some very exciting announcements were made, with all eyes on the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which also recently had one of its biggest releases – Deadpool & Wolverine.
While the Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman starrer continued garnering attention in the theaters, Comic Con was buzzed about something new.
One very important movie and its release window was announced in Hall H and it has left, us and the entire world shocked beyond our understanding.
Avengers: Doomsday will be released in May 2026, and the title and the announcement confirm the addition of Doctor Doom, one of the biggest Marvel comic villains, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And what’s even more exciting is the man set to play this role, but more on that later in this article.
Who is Doctor Doom?
As we mentioned above, Doctor Doom is one of the biggest and undoubtedly one of the best Marvel comic villains ever. Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, Doctor Doom or Victor von Doom first appeared in July 1962, in The Fantastic Four #5 comic.
While he has often been an enemy to the Fantastic Four, this villain has also fought some of the strongest superheroes including Doctor Strange, Iron Man, X-Men, Avengers, and Spider-Man.
Doctor Doom has a brilliant scientific mind and has often been considered maniacal. Some of his many powers include technopathy, dark magic, hypnotism, self-healing, teleportation, time travel, mystical force fields, and elemental manipulation.
This is only the tip of the iceberg, as Doctor Doom poses a big threat to any superhero or supervillain introduced in the Marvel comics so far, and so it makes sense for him to finally have a movie of his own.
Who Will Play Doctor Doom?
The cat is out of the bag as the entire world is currently talking about the man of the hour, Robert Downey Jr., who has been cast as Doctor Doom.
All those who were hoping for his comeback as Iron Man might be a tad disappointed, but overall, there is plenty of buzz and excitement amongst fans as the beloved Downey Jr. returns to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
This casting announcement was also made at Comic Con, with Downey Jr. present, in an iconic reveal.
Of course, not many details about Avengers: Doomsday were revealed, but as of now, this is more than enough to keep the fans excited, even until 2026. Downey Jr. also took to Instagram to announce his iconic return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Conclusion
Joe and Anthony Russo have impressed Marvel fans all across the globe this weekend, and we can’t wait to learn more about what’s next for Avengers: Doomsday.
