Netflix’s latest German movie, Blame the Game, is unique, fun and has a few surprises scattered around the runtime of 90 minutes. It is a quick and breezy watch with several different characters that might often be a little intimidating.
Blame the Game revolves around a new couple, Jan and Pia, who have an adorable meet-cute, followed by their relationship blossoming every day until Pia decides to bring Jan along for game night with her friends.
Now, the game night shouldn’t be too much of a worry, and what ideally should have been a relaxed situation for Jan, turns into a nightmare fairly quickly. In this review, we will talk a little more about Blame the Game, and what worked in its favor, versus what didn’t, which will help you decide whether you want to stream it or skip it.
Comedy, Naked Games…and a Tiger?
The first few minutes of Blame the Game are focused primarily on Jan and Pia. It starts with their meeting, the flirting, their relationship, and several sweet moments that establish that although they are a new couple, they are strong.
However, their honeymoon period is quickly put to a halt when Pia takes Jan over to game night at her friend’s house, and Jan quickly realizes how different he is from all of them.
At the 30-minute mark of Blame the Game, the tensions are more than obvious between different people in the friendship group, and of course, Jan is more nervous than ever around them and uncomfortable.
It doesn’t take long for Jan to become the most relatable character in this movie, and credit must go to Dennis Mojen for his portrayal of this character.
Lucky for Jan, he has one of his friends around, almost behind the scenes, working to help Jan with this disastrous evening, which only continues to get worse.
One of the aspects that truly works in favor of Blame the Game is the fact that one can feel the tension and nervousness that Jan is feeling, from the beginning of the game night and as it escalates. It’s almost an immersive experience of sorts.
Matters only continue to get worse for Pia and Jan, and their relationship, as the movie progresses, especially after Pia’s ex shows up to game night, and that’s the last thing either of them needs.
However, for viewers, it’s interesting because, at this point, the rest of the movie is mostly about placing your bets on whether or not Jan and Pia will remain together by the end of the movie.

After several mishaps, more than one can count on their fingers, Pia and Jan do have their happy ending, even though Jan could have almost been killed by a tiger, but we will leave that for you to find out more about.
