Mike’s Pursuit of the Aryan Brotherhood in Mayor of Kingstown

Tensions rise in “Mayor of Kingstown” season 3, episode 4, as Jeremy Renner’s character, Mike McLusky, deals with the bombings’ aftermath. They find the name, John York, though they’re not sure if he’s connected to the attack that occurred during Mariam’s burial when two bombs fail to go off.

When police arrive in a gas station toilet, they discover John York is armed. Mike was upset that they shot him dead because he wanted to question him.

In an attempt to find out more, Mike breaks up Kareem Moore’s (Michael Beach) workout and tells him that the Aryan Brotherhood is responsible for the bombings.

He insists on meeting their new commander Merle Callahan (Richard Brake). Sensing a rough day ahead, Kareem promises he’ll make arrangements.

Mike confronts Merle about the bombings when they first meet. Merle takes advantage of the circumstance by shifting the responsibility to his late predecessor Gunner. In an attempt to stop the violence that is engulfing Kingstown, Mike pressures Merle for a name within six hours.

Tensions rise in “Mayor of Kingstown” season 3, episode 4, as Mike McLusky, seeks to collect evidence against Merle Callahan, whom he believes ordered the bombings. Mike plans to track down a witness who can bring Merle to justice at a meeting with Ian, Kyle, and Robert.

Finding the last suspect linked to the police station explosion is Robert’s job; it is important to apprehend them quickly to link Merle to the crime.

They find Macon, a drug addict who is anxious to leave the city with his accomplice Stamper, as a result of their search. Following a high-speed chase through the streets, there is a wreck and a foot pursuit. Kyle talks to Stamper, promising him some leeway in return for helping to bring Macon to justice.

Stamper gives up, deciding to comply to keep himself safe and perhaps even aid his friend. Later, Robert talks about how Kyle handled the incident and expresses interest in hiring him for the SWAT squad, implying that their relationship may change.

The story gets more intense in “Mayor of Kingstown” season 3, episode 4, as Mike McLusky, makes allies and enemies while attempting to dominate the criminal underworld in Kingstown and pursue justice. Mike questions him on a rooftop after Bunny’s team’s assistance in Macon’s capture.

Despite Mike’s assurances of protection, Macon, who is devoted to the Aryan Brotherhood, won’t betray Merle Callahan.

As Macon makes fun of Mike’s past prison experiences and makes references to violent occurrences involving Merle, Mike becomes enraged. Mike knocks Macon from the roof to his death out of a fit of rage and impatience, signifying the cruelty and unclear morals involved in his pursuit of power.

Afterwards in “Mayor of Kingstown”, Mike meets Merle, forging an uncomfortable connection and making suggestions about potential future cooperation. Merle understands the brutal heritage of the Aryan Brotherhood in prison society while also appreciating Mike’s usefulness as an enforcer and survivor. 

A different aspect of Kingstown’s harsh reality is shown by Anna Fletcher’s admission and plea in court, which contrasts personal justice with the law. As the episode comes to an end, Konstantin gets a call from Merle that seems promising and raises the possibility of more complex power relations and alliances developing in Kingstown’s unstable environment.
