Ultraman: Rising Review: Ken Sato Versus Parenting in Netflix’s Latest Superhero Animation

Ultraman: Rising Review

Can you possibly imagine Captain America being a basketball player and a superhero? Or the Joker being a swimmer and a supervillain? The chances are low, but not when it comes to Ken Sato because he can do it all…sometimes, at least. Netflix’s latest animated movie, Ultraman: Rising has stolen our hearts and we have no doubt it will do the same for you too.

Ultraman: Rising isn’t just for the superhero fans but for anyone who enjoys a heartfelt family comedy movie, because that’s the best and briefest way to describe this latest movie. There are so many elements to Ultraman: Rising that pull us closer to it and frankly, if time permits, watch a second time, and maybe even a third, just for the laughs and animation.

In this review, we will talk a little more about Ultraman: Rising and you can decide whether you want to stream it or skip it.

Ken Sato Delivers in Ultraman: Rising

Ultraman: Rising begins with a flashback in Japan where a young Ken Sato is spending some quality time with his family. To begin with, this scene challenges some gender norms as we see the father cooking and the mother invested in watching baseball.

This wholesome scene with a hint of action is more than enough to set the tone for the rest of the movie, and it does so brilliantly. Just as there is no dull moment in the opening scene, there is no dull moment in the rest of the movie either.

One can sit back and relax while they watch Ultraman: Rising as the move shifts to the present time where we witness Ken Sato as Ultraman, and also one of the best baseball players in the world.

This character was impressive and cocky from the get-go and it lets the audience know that the entire movie will see different sides to this character who is so far away from being one-dimensional. Ken Sato is the heart of Ultraman: Rising, and rightfully so.

Although Ken Sato carries the movie of his shoulders, he is also accompanied by a baby Kaiju, and in that moment, the protagonist realizes that he must do his best job raising a baby, managing his baseball career, and fighting the demons of his past as he battles some of his own daddy issues and the loss of his mother. It truly is a lot for one man to handle, but it helps drive the narrative forward in the right direction.

Ultraman: Rising has everything that one could possibly hope for a family movie. There’s honestly, action, comedy, tear-jerker moments, and even a hint of romance as the protagonist tries to make it through life, one day at a time.
