A Quiet Place: Day One Review – Poignant Tear-Jerker With Exceptional Performances

A Quiet Place: Day One

A Quiet Place: Day One directed by Michael Sarnoski and story by John Krasinski has finally hit the theaters, and serves as a prequel to the 2018 movie, A Quiet Place, which has now turned into a franchise with three movies.

For now, our focus remains on A Quiet Place: Day One, which might just be one of the best movies of 2024, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

All those who have watched the first two installments of A Quiet Place, which were released in 2018 and 2020 possibly know what they can expect from Sarnoski and Krasinski’s latest movie.

While you might have your expectations and benchmarks in place, A Quiet Place: Day One is all ready to exceed them all, and in this review, we will tell you exactly why.

Lupita Nyong’o and Joseph Quinn Exceed Expectations

The lead cast members of A Quiet Place: Day One are the lovely and talented Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years a Slave, Black Panther) and Joseph Quinn (Stranger Things, Fantastic Four), and we are convinced that without them, this horror science-fiction wouldn’t have been nearly as good.

Of course, plenty of credit goes to the writers and director of the movie for bringing their talent to the big screen with an impressive storyline and emotional dialogues, but Nyong’o and Quinn are the soul of A Quiet Place: Day One, and there’s no denying that.

A Quiet Place: Day One is set in New York City, and revolves around Sam, played by Nyong’o, who finds herself in a hospice, battling the last stages of cancer, with little time left. One day, the hospice takes a trip to the city, where Sam is promised some pizza, but things quickly go south after a brutal alien invasion with creatures who have ultra-sensitive hearing to manmade noise.

Very quickly, Sam finds herself secluded from the crowd, and not only because she wants to survive the invasion a little longer, but because she wants the slice of pizza she was promised.

Of course, it isn’t just about the pizza, but the food item also plays its part in A Quiet Place: Day One as a metaphor, which plays out beautifully, especially after the male protagonist, Eric, played by Quinn, is introduced.

Eric is a shockingly relatable character for anyone who might suffer from anxiety because this British law school student cannot keep calm or stay alone, and finds himself tagging along with Sam, and her cat Frodo, wherever they go.

A Quiet Place: Day One might be a movie about an alien invasion with some serious jump scares that make you clutch your chest, but this movie is also about humans, and their need for companionship, and goes into depths you would never expect it to.

One of the best parts about this horror sci-fi is the fact that it doesn’t try and exclude itself from anyone’s watchlist. It isn’t for the diehard horror fans, neither is it for someone looking for an emotional movie revolving around a woman who is about to die, it is for everyone. A Quiet Place: Day One is an experience you would not want to miss out on.

Conclusion

A Quiet Place: Day One has plenty to look forward to, from exceptional performances to heartbreaking scenes, it has a little bit of everything, and we would highly recommend carrying a box of tissues for the emotional end of the movie.

If you haven’t watched Michael Sarnoski’s latest movie just yet, now might be the perfect time to do so.
