Supacell Episode 1 Review

Netflix’s latest series, Supacell, tells the story of a group of black superheroes, and the first episode of the series has certainly set the bar high. Supacell has been created by Rapman and stars a phenomenal cast including Tosin Cole, Adelayo Adedayo, Nadine Mills, Josh Tedeku, and Eric Kofi-Abrefa amongst many other talented actors and actresses.

Not only is the series mysterious, but also manages to tackle social injustice faced by the black community in the United Kingdom. Supacell is primarily set in South London, and here’s our review of the first episode, and there will be some spoilers ahead, so tread lightly!

A Vibrant and Engaging Start

Supacell Episode 1 is off to a strong start, and from the very first scene, the audience is made aware that this Netflix series is ready to set itself apart from other Superhero movies and shows. Intense and bloody start!

Following that intense start, the episode dives into a rather upbeat mode as it introduces the main character – Michael. It doesn’t take long for us to fall in love with him – he’s funny, charming, and treats his girlfriend right. Supacell Episode 1 does a brilliant job establishing these characters, some dynamics, and where the series is headed.

There’s also no smidge of doubt that Supacell has primarily black characters and their stories, whilst also doing a brilliant job of representing different aspects of black culture and showcasing the struggles faced by the community and the social injustice that consumes them on a daily basis.

Admittedly, as far as the first episode of Supacell goes, it gets a little hard to keep up with the characters as they’re getting introduced, but when it comes to this series, it’s important to keep your faith and know that things will eventually align, which they begin to in the second half of the episode.

Apart from the setting, characters, and narrative so far, Supacell also makes good use of visuals for the most part of the episode, especially when the element of superpowers comes into play. Nothing feels too cheesy and forced, and it is just the right amount for a superhero series.

Supacell Episode 1 ends on a very tricky and shocking note, and you will find yourself looking forward to the next episode in no time. As far as a pilot episode goes, Rapman’s latest series on Netflix gets the job done.
