Unfrosted Review: Jerry Seinfeld’s Directorial Debut is Comedy Chaos

For decades now, Jerry Seinfeld has been an actor, stand-up comedian, writer, and producer, and his most notable work is the popular sitcom, Seinfeld, which was released in 1989 and ended in 1998. When it comes to comedy in the US, Seinfeld’s name is at the top of the list, and now, he is out with his directorial debut on a streaming platform. Unfrosted, directed by Seinfeld, is now officially streaming on Netflix, and need to talk about it!

Unfrosted tells the story of one of the most popular American packaged foods of all time, Pop-Tarts! This latest movie takes the viewers back to the 1960s when Pop-Tarts made their way to endless homes and shelves at supermarkets.

It’s Silly, It’s Chaotic…It’s Seinfeld

On paper, Jerry Seinfeld directing and starring in a movie that tells the story of one of the most popular snacks sounds like a brilliant idea. Especially when you take a deeper look at the cast members who have joined Seinfeld in completing this endeavor.

To put it in the simplest way possible, Unfrosted was an okay-ish movie. It was mediocre. It was passable. Unfrosted was simply…average. Seinfeld and average don’t normally go together, and that’s something fans of his can and will agree with, but in this case, it is the bitter truth.

While Unfrosted was an average movie, it has certain moments and elements that steered it away from being below-average, and these elements will draw more viewership, especially when the social media team starts focusing on certain characters of the movie, because let’s face it, no movie in recent times has seen a star cast like this!

Apart from Seinfeld obviously being one of the main characters of the movie, he was joined with some of the biggest names in Hollywood, and on television. Starting with Melissa McCarthy, Amy Schumer, and Sarah Cooper, who made up for majority of the female cast In an otherwise male-dominated movie, but let’s face it, it was set in the 60s.

These women were joined by Jim Gaffigan, Bill Burr, Max Greenfield, James Marsden, Dan Levy, and the heartthrob of the whole world, Hugh Grant.

All these fantastic, and incredibly funny actors and actresses were a part of Unfrosted, and admittedly, were also the best part of it. When it comes to the narrative of the movie, which ideally should have been the selling point, it was well-executed but was accompanied by almost far too much silliness, at certain points, Unfrosted felt rather child-like, and sadly, it did not do wonders for the movie when it comes to the big picture.

Nevertheless, the hilarious performances by the cast stood out amongst all the chaos, despite being a key part of it. So, if you find yourself streaming Unfrosted, keep a lookout for all the celebrities that Seinfeld got together under one title, because that was truly something, especially since Unfrosted won’t make it to the Oscars like Oppenheimer did.
