What Is The Sympathizer All About?

The Sympathizer is in the genre of dark comedy and historical drama. It is inspired by the namesake novel that was penned by Viet Thanh Nguyen. The novel also won a Pulitzer prize and was a success. The series is taken from the life of a Captain (played by Hoa Xuande) who was a part of the army of South Vietnam and was working for the North part.

After the Vietnam War ends, the Captain moves to the USA along with a general. He lives as a refugee that habits people from the southern part of Vietnam. He spies in the region and is answerable to the Viet Cong. The series explores what it feels like to live a dual life with different ideologies.

Don McKellar and Park Chan-wook have created the show. They are also the executive producers of The Sympathizer along with Robert Downey Jr., Susan Downey, John Sloss, and Niv Fichman among others.

What Happened In The Sympathizer Episode 1?

The Sympathizer Episode 1 is titled Death Wish and it was released on April 14th, 2024. Park Chan-wook directed the episode and co-wrote it with Don McKellar. It starts with a guy named Captian confessing his history at a camp in the Northern region of Vietnam. His real story takes place in 1975 just before the capture of Saigon. He meets Claude (played by Robert Downey Jr.) who is an agent with the CIA.

They watch a lady going through torture; General (Toan Le) is also in the audience. Captain works with the army alongside Man (Duy Nguyễn) and Bon (Fred Nguyen Khan). Captain is visited by Claude who tells him about the situation of the country. During Frequent Wind operation, General asks for two planes and Man asks the Captain to go to the US. He says yes and tells Bon that he will save him as well.

Captain, General, and other people are on the way in a bus to the airfield which gets bombed. It ends up getting crashed. Bon’s wife and kid end up dying and Captain tries to convince Bon to leave. However, Bon doesn’t want to leave now. This forces the Captain to leave all alone in the plane. The episode ends with Captain reflecting on his failure to protect the family of Bon.

What To Expect From The Sympathizer Episode 2?

The Sympathizer Episode 2 is named Good Little Asian; Park Chan-wook directed the episode and wrote it with Naomi Iizuka and Don McKellar.

The series will explore Captain moving to the United States and starting a new life. Unlike the first episode which took place in Vietnam, this episode will have a drastic change in the setting as it will take place in Los Angeles.

We can expect the Vietnamese people to not really like the situation of the camp for refugees. This is something that is mentioned in the book. He might also develop a relationship with the daughter of General and a woman with American and Japanese roots. Amid all the events, Captain will continue to be the spy of his country.
