What Is The Sympathizer All About?

The Sympathizer is the creation of popular South Korean director Park Chan-wook along with Don McKellar. They are also its showrunners. It’s adapted from the 2015 eponymous novel that bagged a Pultizer Prizer to its writer Viet Thanh Nguyen.

It follows Captain (played by Hoa Xuande) who is a captain of the police and is a plant of North Vietnam. Situations forced him to leave his country and move to the United States right after the Vietnam War ended. He works as a spy in the USA and has to frequently send information to the Viet Cong.

The episodes are directed by Chan-wook, Marc Munden, and Fernando Meirelles. The executive producers of the show include Park Chan-Wook, Robert Downey Jr., Don McKellar, Susan Downey, and Viet Thanh Nguyen among others. The series premiered on April 14th, 2024.

What Happened In The Sympathizer Episode 4?

The Sympathizer Episode 4 was called Give Us Some Good Lines and it was released on May 5th, 2024. Fernando Meirelles helmed the episode while Don McKellar and Park Chan-wook wrote it.

In this episode, we see Captain working on his adaptation of Hamlet and have a meeting with Nicos Damianos (again played by Robert Downey Jr.) for the same. Captain meets many people including Sofia Mori (played by Sandra Oh) and then sets off to California for its shooting. Many actors and singers like Ryan Glenn (David Duchovny) and James Yoon (John Cho) among others show up on the set.

The episode further showcases Captain struggling to get an accurate Vietnamese accent from an actress. Later, the shooting is halted when Glenn and a gun go missing. We see him coming back after Lana (played by Vy Le) and Nicos ask him to come back. Captain gets fired later by Nicos as the latter wants to add a rape scene in the film.

On the Captain’s cue, Jamie fights with Gleen, and the shot is ruined. We also see Nicos attempting to kill Captain via bombs.

The upcoming episode might show him contemplating his tryst with Hollywood. His work as a cultural consultant on the set did not go as expected. We can speculate that the chapter is over and he will be moving on with General to work on something else. He will be working as a spy while the General might have something in the plan that was hinted at in the prior episode.
