What Is Avatar: The Last Airbender All About?

Avatar: The Last Airbender is a live-action adaptation of the namesake animated television series that ran on Nickelodeon between the years 2005 and 2008. The original series was created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko.

In September 2018, the live-action adaptation was first announced with the same creators attached to the project. However, they parted ways due to some creative differences. They came on board In the year 2021 with Albert Kim serving as the developer of the show.

The series is set in a fictional world that is torn by a war. Inspired by a variety of cultures from Asia, the place has human beings divided into four nations. Some people can get into the four classic elements water, earth, air, and fire. They are named as Water Tribes, the Fire Nation, the Air Nomads, and the Earth Kingdom. Avatar Aang (played by Gordon Cormier) is a 12-year-old Airbender and the last living of its kind.

He is also considered as someone who is able to master all the four elements out there unlike others who can only master one of them. Aang is also someone who can bridge the two different worlds of mortals and spirits.

He goes into loggerheads with the Fire Nation who plans to take over the world. Aang also joins hands with his friends Sokka and Katara to master all elements. At the same time, he is chased by the crown prince of Fire Nation who was exiled, Zuko. He plans to regain control by capturing Aang

What Happened In The Last Season End?

The first season had eight episodes in total with the last one being called Legends. We get to see Aang along with his companions Katara and Sokka arriving at a tiny island. The place is home to several elite warriors who have been named after the popular Avatar Kyoshi. Meanwhile, The Fire Nation finds out about Aang’s location.

Later, Omashu faces the Avatars while a mechanist, and a handful of rebels also plan to disrupt their journey toward protecting Earth. Aang is captured and a king pays him a visit. We then see the siblings trying to find their friends as they travel through a dark and dingy tunnel.

In the second last episode, Katara goes into a faceoff with a master named Waterbender while Sokka gets to meet a princess. In the end, the Fire Nation reaches the North while being headed by Zhao. They plan to weaken the power of the Water Tribe. During the battle, we get to see a powerful and never-before-seen statue of Aang.

What Can We Expect From The Second Season?

In March 2024, the makers of Avatar: The Last Airbender renewed it for not just the second season but a third season as well. Upon its release on Netflix, the series was able to amass more than 1.1 million views times within two weeks. It ended up becoming one of the most-watched shows on the platform.

In the follow-up seasons, we can expect to witness the transformation of the avatars from children to ultimate and mature warriors in a big-scale war. We can also get to see Prince Zuko (played by Dallas Liu) go through a dilemma and wonder if he is fighting for the right cause. Aang, meanwhile, will continue his training to master all the elements.

The second season might also witness a jump in time. This has been confirmed by the show’s creator Albert Kim who said that in order to avoid the issue of actors aging, there will be a time gap between the first and second seasons.

Towards the end of the first season, we get a mention of the looming threat of Sozin’s Comet that will help in increasing the power of the Fire Nation. We might get to see more details of this significant astrological thing in the follow-up seasons. The streamer dropped a teaser picture suggesting that the second and third seasons will focus on the avatar’s tryst with the Earth Kingdom and Fire Nations respectively.

Do We Have A Release Date?

So far, no there is no confirmation of the release date for a second or third season. However, looking at how fast both seasons were greenlit even before the first one dropped, we can expect the new season to go on the floor very quickly in the year 2024.

Who Will Be In The Cast?

Gordon Cormier (who plays the role of Avatar Aang) will surely return for the subsequent seasons since he is the main character. Apart from him, his companions Kiawentiio (Katara) and Ian Ousley (Sokka) are also expected to return. Other actors such as Dallas Liu (Prince Zuko), Paul Sun-Hyung Lee (Uncle Iroh), Ken Leung as (Zhao) and Daniel Dae Kim (Fire Lord Ozai) are also expected to make a comeback.
